Scholarly research has identified at least twenty films based on the works of the profilic Agatha Christie, commencing with a German film of 1928 featuring the authoress's pioneer husband-and-wife detective partnership Tuppence and Tommy Beresford. In the early "Thirties" her most famous hero, Hercule Poirot, appeared in a series of films, but for some decades thereafter the spotlight was mainly on her almost equally famous creation Miss Marple, so memorably impersonated on the screen by Margaret Rutherford. Then in 1974, just forty years after the publication of the book, Poirot returned triumphantly in the film version of Murder on the Orient Express. That film's judicious mixture of mystery, murder, snobbery and big star names, together with the exotic setting aboard the world's most luxurious transcontinental express guaranteed its phenomenal success and the appearance four years later of its sequel. Death on the Nile (1978) contained all the succesful elements of its predecessor, while replacing the former's world-famous train by the luxury Nile steamer Karnak, and thereby gaining immeasurably by way of breath-taking footage (shot by Britain's premier cameraman Jack Cardiff) of the more famous monuments at Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel.
So we cruise down the legendary river in splendid luxury, while a mystery assassin takes toll of the richly assorted passenger-list-handsome honeymoon couple, jilted suitor, idelaistic young radical, wealthy American socialite and disgruntled lady companion, sexy French maid, and lady author of romantic fiction whose personal love affair is with the bottle, not to speak of the world-famous Poirot of course, and his English lawyer stooge, so conveniently on hands for resolving this new Riddle of the Sphinx. All in all a most satisfying and highly moral entertainment, this quinessentially British production followed its Royal Premiere with a vastly profitable critical and box-office triumph at home and in the U.S.A.
